Universal metric or particular imperial?

Whether it is twips for typographic screen measurements, hands for horses’ heights or furlongs for horse racing, many imperial units are used for specific purposes. By contrast, the International System of Units (SI), the modern version of the metric system, is based on the principle that each measurable phenomenon has one basic named unit and all the multiples and subdivisions of the unit then follow the same logical structure using prefixes.

Lady Kinnock of Holyhead obituary

Glenys Elizabeth Kinnock, Lady Kinnock of Holyhead, née Parry. Born 7 July 1944; died 3 December 2023.

We are mourning the death at the age of 79 of Lady Glenys Kinnock, whose husband, Neil Kinnock, is one of the patrons of UKMA. She was somebody who was much more than a political spouse, but rather a politician of note in her own right.

How can we get rid of the EU bogeyman to clear path for metrication?

The fight to keep the imperial system and resist the growing role of the metric system in the UK has been erroneously seen as the plucky British underdog gaining victory over the European bully. This is how metrication issues are reported in populist national newspapers. Hence the growing hostility to the European Union has come in tandem with growing hostility to the metric system. Many wrongly believe the myth that the metric system has been imposed on the UK by the EU. The EU is seen as the villain or bogeyman in the metrication process in the twenty-first century. How can we demolish the EU bogeyman to clear the path for the completion of metrication in the UK?

Metric Style Guide – has it had any effect?

Despite the best efforts of UKMA to promote correct usage, the writing of metric symbols leaves much to be desired. Former UKMA Chair Robin Paice reflects on the impact of the UKMA’s Metric Style Guide since its publication, evaluates other style guides, comments on the teaching of measurement units in schools and makes suggestions for UKMA’s committee to improve the situation.

The metric system’s contribution to computing

One of the most notable contributions that the metric system has made to computing is the widespread use of metric prefixes for various computer specifications. Where would the computer industry be without the metric system? It is hard to imagine what it would have looked like without the metric system.

Parallels with the Brexiteers – winning against the odds

During the Thatcher government of the 1980’s and the Major government of the 1990’s, the Eurosceptics were a fringe movement with few supporters. At the time, UK withdrawal from the EU was unthinkable and few called for the UK to withdraw from the EU, even among the Eurosceptics. Over the years, there were a number of trends that helped the Eurosceptics to gain public support for their cause and Euroscepticism grew in the media and in the Conservative Party. UKMA did not take sides in the Brexit referendum in mid-2016 and takes no position on Brexit or future UK-EU relations. Whatever one thinks of Brexit, the fact remains that the Brexiteers have won against all the odds. Brexit was achieved when the UK left the EU at 11pm GMT on Friday 31 January 2020. How did they achieve this against all the odds and what can UKMA learn from them?

PHSO initial response to my complaint about BEIS

After I exhausted the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS) complaints procedure and they failed to acknowledge or do anything about their misleading imperial units consultation document or biased survey, I sent off my BEIS complaints form dated 31 October 2022 to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) via my MP. After many months, I got an initial response.
